TABGAMEHUB / BROWSER GAMES

Browser FPS Games

Looking for a shooter that runs in a browser tab? This list collects the FPS projects TabGameHub has opened and checked, from the original Quake trilogy and Return to Castle Wolfenstein to Half-Life, Counter-Strike 1.6, Halo: Combat Evolved and a few fan-made modern shooters. Most are community ports or preservation projects running on WebAssembly, so the first load can be large and a desktop browser with a mouse usually works best. A few, such as WebXash and Halo CE Mobile, need your own legally owned game files. Each guide tells you how to reach the menu, what the project asks for, and what we did not test.

ID TECH FAMILY

Quake and id Tech shooters

QuakeWorld, Quake II and Quake III Arena share player-name launchers on the pieter.com projects. Return to Castle Wolfenstein warns of an initial download of about 380 MB. Urban Terror identifies itself as Urban Terror and credits FrozenSand. Compare the three Quake titles on the series page.

GOLDSRC / CS-STYLE

Half-Life and Counter-Strike in the browser

Half-Life (Pixelsuft) opens a separate Xash3D setup screen with storage and game-data choices. WebXash is a frontend for Half-Life and Counter-Strike 1.6 that lists demo choices and, for full games, expects your own valve/cstrike files. Surfd is a standalone surf project, not a full Counter-Strike port; the project specifies desktop keyboard and mouse.

HALO CE

Halo: Combat Evolved projects

Halo: Combat Evolved Web is Mitchell Hynes’s browser project; our desktop visit reached engine loading, not gameplay. Halo CE Mobile is a separate project that documents touch, controller and keyboard options and requires your own Xbox Halo disc image for map storage of up to about 1.8 GB, according to the project.

FAN PROJECTS

Zombies and modern-style shooters

Black Ops Zombies offers a map picker for Kino der Toten, Five, Moon and more; it is not a listing for the full Black Ops campaign. OVZ: Global Flashpoint reached a Play menu after an automatic asset download; we have not play-tested matches.

BEFORE YOU START

Which ones need your own game files?

01

Clearly require your own files

WebXash expects your own valve/cstrike folders or ZIP for full games (demo choices are listed separately and were not launched). Halo CE Mobile requires your own Xbox Halo .iso or .xiso.

02

Setup mentions game data

Half-Life (Pixelsuft) opens a setup screen with storage choices and game-data selection. We did not supply files or establish the complete requirement.

03

No own-file step observed on entry

The Quake projects, Surfd, Halo: Combat Evolved Web, Black Ops Zombies and OVZ: Global Flashpoint did not ask for a user-supplied archive on the entry or menu screens we reached. Large first loads or automatic asset downloads can still apply.

CONTROLS

Mouse lock, fullscreen and controller tips

01

Desktop keyboard and mouse

Surfd’s project specifies desktop keyboard and mouse. WebXash’s README specifies keyboard and mouse. A desktop browser with a mouse is the usual starting point for the Quake and other FPS entries we opened.

02

Touch and controllers

Halo CE Mobile documents touch, controller and keyboard options; we have not independently tested mobile gameplay. Quake III’s project claims mobile and gamepad support; those claims were not independently tested.

03

What we did not verify

We have not independently verified mouse lock, fullscreen behaviour or controller mapping for these FPS projects. Read each guide and the original project’s current instructions before assuming input works.

GOOD QUESTIONS

FPS setup & requirements

Which ones need my own files?

WebXash expects your own valve/cstrike files for full games. Halo CE Mobile requires your own Xbox Halo disc image. Half-Life (Pixelsuft) shows a game-data selection step; we have not established the complete file requirement. The Quake projects and Surfd did not ask for a user-supplied archive on the screens we reached.

Are these mouse and keyboard only?

Surfd and WebXash document desktop keyboard and mouse. Halo CE Mobile documents touch and controller options; we have not checked mobile gameplay. Quake III’s project claims mobile and gamepad support without our independent test.

What about multiplayer?

Many projects list multiplayer modes. Our checks reached menus and start screens; we did not join live matches or verify server lists.

Where is the Quake series page?

See Play Quake in your browser for a comparison of QuakeWorld, Quake II and Quake III Arena, plus Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Urban Terror.
