The page showed "v0.8.3 beta · Free life simulation · Real statistics from 172 countries · Ages 15+", a language switcher (English, 한국어, 日本語, 繁體中文, 简体中文, Tiếng Việt, Français, ไทย, Español, Deutsch), a live births/deaths counter, a "If you were a baby born right now" table (India 17.6%, China 6.7%, Nigeria 5.7%, per UN WPP 2024) and a "Be born" button. We did not start a life, so in-session screens such as the yearly focus choices and status bars are described from the About page, not from our own play.
Requirements and unknowns
What is 1 in 8 Billion?
1 in 8 Billion is a free life simulation that runs in your browser at 1in8b.life, with an About page describing it as a game where "you are born at random as one of the babies being born now" and live that life to its end using real statistics from 172 countries and territories. It was first released October 5, 2026, according to the About page. The Korean title is 80억 분의 1 and the Japanese title is 80億分の1.
The About page names 1in8b.life as the only official address and lists several domains that are not theirs: 1in8bn.com, 1in8billion.app, 1in8b.app, 1in8b.live, 1in8b.net and in8b.com. For a different kind of browser life sim, a multiplayer city game that needs an account, see the Lagos Life guide. Both games sit in TabGameHub's browser life simulator games collection.
How to start 1 in 8 Billion
These are the steps our page check followed. We did not start a life, so later in-session screens are described from the About page, not from our own play.
- Open 1in8b.life/en/ directly, rather than a lookalike domain. The About page names 1in8b.life as the only official address.
- Read the homepage, which showed a version string, a language switcher, a live births/deaths counter and an "If you were a baby born right now" country table in our check.
- Choose a world if offered: the About page lists The past, Today, The future and Any world.
- Select "Be born" to start a life. According to the About page, your country, sex and family means are drawn from real statistical shares, and you can optionally enter your real birth country to compare on that device.
Controls and settings
We did not start a life, so the following comes from the About page rather than our own session. Each year you pick a focus, and the game presents decisions about school, work, love, moving abroad or medical care; choices change odds but never decide outcomes. An "Auto mode" lets you just watch instead of choosing. At ages 5, 15, 30, 50 and 70, time pauses with one question, and you can pause or speed playback up to 16x at any point. A "Leave out frightening scenes" option is available for hard topics, and a "move records" code can transfer saved progress to another device.
Why 1 in 8 Billion is trending
An ASCII.jp article, last updated 15 Oct 2026, describes 1 in 8 Billion as a free browser game buzzing on social media, released October 5 by individual developer Jin Hwi-eus and built with generative AI in about four hours, citing Korea's Kukmin Ilbo. The ASCII.jp headline translates roughly as "'I cried' 'It makes you think': AI-made life simulation game '80億分の1' goes viral". The operator also says the game was made with AI (Claude), while the life-outcome numbers themselves are drawn from public statistics such as UN World Population Prospects 2024, WHO and the World Happiness Report 2024, according to the About page.
Tips before you start a life
These are setup tips drawn from the official About page, not strategy from our own completed life, since we did not start one.
- Use the official address, 1in8b.life, rather than a similarly named site. The About page lists several lookalike domains that are not theirs.
- Choose your life length before starting: the About page lists about 30 minutes, about 1 hour (default) or about 1.5 hours to reach that country's life expectancy.
- Turn on "Leave out frightening scenes" if you'd rather not see detail on hard topics like illness or violence; the About page says the game is made for ages 15 and up and that help resources are shown where relevant.
- Try Auto mode if you just want to watch a life play out instead of making every yearly decision yourself.
- Save your move-records code if you want to continue the same life on another device later, per the About page.
1 in 8 Billion vs Lagos Life
1 in 8 Billion and Lagos Life are both browser life simulators, but they work very differently. 1 in 8 Billion is a solo simulation of one randomly assigned life, built on real country statistics, with no account needed to start. Lagos Life is a multiplayer city you build a character inside, with required account sign-up and other real players around you. See the full comparison on the browser life simulator games collection page.
